A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Gerard de Jode depicting the allegorical connection between Old Age and the planet Jupiter.
This engraving by Gerard de Jode depicts the allegorical representation of Old Age under the astrological influence of Jupiter. The composition is divided into two distinct registers. In the upper section, Jupiter is shown riding an eagle amidst clouds, brandishing his characteristic thunderbolts. This celestial placement establishes his dominion over the terrestrial sphere below.
In the lower register, the scene features a seated female figure labelled 'Memoria', who rests her hand upon a vessel. Beside her stands an elderly man, dressed in period attire, who gestures towards the heavens. The background includes a secondary scene of figures gathered in a camp or military setting, providing a sense of narrative depth. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Vis REMINISCENDI sexta est ætate senili IVPITER hanc sextus rite planeta fouet', links the faculty of memory to the sixth age of man, governed by the planet Jupiter.
De Jode, a prominent cartographer and printmaker based in Antwerp, utilised precise line work to define the musculature of the figures and the textures of the drapery. The engraving demonstrates the technical proficiency common in late sixteenth-century Flemish printmaking, where mythological and astrological themes were frequently explored to comment on the human condition. The contrast between the divine authority of Jupiter and the earthly concerns of the figures creates a balanced visual dialogue. This work reflects the period's interest in classical iconography and the systematic categorisation of human life stages through the lens of planetary influence.
