Outbreak (Losbruch) is the fifth plate in Käthe Kollwitz's seminal cycle, The Peasants' War (Bauernkrieg). Created between 1902 and 1908, this series depicts the historical uprising of German peasants in the sixteenth century. Kollwitz employs a stark, monochromatic palette to convey the raw energy of the revolt. The central figure, Black Anna, stands with her arms raised, acting as a catalyst for the surging crowd behind her.
