Description
A powerful etching from the Peasants' War series, depicting a surging mob led by the figure of Black Anna.
Outbreak (Losbruch) is the fifth plate in Käthe Kollwitz's seminal cycle, The Peasants' War (Bauernkrieg). Created between 1902 and 1908, this series depicts the historical uprising of German peasants in the sixteenth century. Kollwitz employs a stark, monochromatic palette to convey the raw energy of the revolt. The central figure, Black Anna, stands with her arms raised, acting as a catalyst for the surging crowd behind her. Her posture is one of urgent command, driving the momentum of the composition forward. Kollwitz utilises etching and aquatint to build texture and shadow, creating a sense of chaotic movement. The figures are rendered with heavy, gestural lines that suggest the physical strain and desperation of the mob. Unlike traditional historical depictions, the focus remains on the collective action of the oppressed rather than individual heroism. The composition is dense, with the mass of bodies pressing against the foreground, drawing the viewer into the fray. The artist avoids fine detail in favour of expressive, dark masses that define the forms of the peasants as they charge across the field. This work demonstrates her technical mastery of printmaking, particularly in her ability to manipulate light and shadow to heighten the emotional tension of the scene. The series as a whole reflects her interest in the struggles of the working class and the historical cycles of social unrest. By choosing the Peasants' War as her subject, she connects the historical past to the social conditions of her own time, maintaining a focus on the human cost of conflict.
