A precise graphite drawing by Dutch artist Lucebert, capturing a formal moment of document exchange between two men.
Lucebert, the pseudonym of Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk, is primarily recognised for his association with the Cobra movement and his dual career as a poet and painter. While his earlier work often features the spontaneous, expressive abstraction characteristic of the Cobra group, his later output frequently includes more controlled, representational drawings. This piece, titled Overdracht van akte, depicts a formal scene involving the transfer of a legal document.
The composition focuses on two men seated at a table, their attention directed towards a document held between them. A third figure is visible in the background, providing a sense of depth to the office setting. The artist employs graphite to create a clear, observational study. The shading is applied with precision to define the folds of the suits and the contours of the faces, demonstrating a departure from his more chaotic, early-career style. The line work is deliberate, capturing the gravity of the administrative interaction.
This drawing offers a glimpse into the artist's versatility. It moves away from the raw, childlike spontaneity of his earlier years, showing a capacity for realistic depiction and narrative clarity. The work functions as a record of a specific social or legal transaction, rendered with a steady hand and a focus on the interaction between the subjects. The monochromatic palette emphasises the formal nature of the scene, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the gestures and expressions of the individuals involved. It is a quiet, observational work that documents a moment of professional exchange, executed with the technical skill that defined the later stages of his career.
