Description
A Flemish Baroque genre scene by David Teniers the Younger depicting peasants dancing and playing music outside a rural inn. This detailed oil painting captures the social customs of seventeenth-century Flanders.
David Teniers the Younger was a leading Flemish painter of the seventeenth century. He became famous for his genre scenes depicting the everyday lives of rural workers. This painting shows a group gathered outside a brick inn. A couple dances in the centre while a bagpiper sits on a stone block to the left. Other figures sit at a table or stand in doorways. A small dog runs in the foreground. The composition uses a diagonal arrangement. The heavy mass of the inn on the left balances the open sky and distant trees on the right. Teniers used a palette of earthy browns and ochres. These tones are typical of his work from the 1640s. The light enters from the left, casting soft shadows across the dirt ground. Teniers often painted these scenes for wealthy urban patrons in Antwerp and Brussels. While the subject is rural, the execution is sophisticated. He avoided the cruder caricatures found in the works of earlier artists like Adriaen Brouwer. Instead, he presented a more orderly view of peasant festivities. The bagpipe was a common symbol of rural life in Flemish art. It appears frequently in Teniers' kermesse paintings. The artist was the son-in-law of Jan Brueghel the Elder. He served as the court painter to Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, the governor of the Spanish Netherlands. His influence on genre painting lasted for decades. This work is a characteristic example of his ability to capture movement and social interaction within a small scale.
