A surrealist composition by Sabin Balasa depicting a metallic knight suspended between two rock formations over a vast sea.
Sabin Balasa, a Romanian painter known for his distinct fusion of classical motifs and surrealist imagery, presents a haunting vision in Permanent Middle Ages. The composition features a metallic, knight-like figure stretched horizontally between two jagged, weathered rock formations. This figure acts as a bridge, suspended over a vast, deep blue expanse of water. The contrast between the cold, rigid armour of the figure and the organic, porous texture of the stone creates a sense of temporal displacement.
Balasa often employed a smooth, polished application of paint, which gives his subjects an ethereal, almost sculptural quality. The light source appears uniform, casting soft shadows that define the craggy surfaces of the rocks while leaving the horizon line hazy and indistinct. The sword, held by the figure, points downwards, adding a sharp, linear element to the otherwise rounded and weathered forms of the environment.
This work reflects the artist's interest in the intersection of history and myth. By placing a medieval archetype within a desolate, timeless setting, Balasa invites the viewer to consider the persistence of past conflicts and structures in the modern world. The blue tones dominate the palette, creating a cool, meditative atmosphere that draws the eye across the expanse of the sea. The painting avoids overt narrative, instead relying on the juxtaposition of its elements to evoke a specific mood. The stillness of the scene, combined with the impossible posture of the central figure, suggests a state of suspended animation. It is a work that rewards careful observation of its textures, from the fine detail on the armour to the rough, eroded surfaces of the cliffs.
