An eighteenth-century Dutch etching by Leonard Schenk depicting an allegorical figure of Modesty, characterised by classical drapery and symbolic iconography.
This etching by the Dutch printmaker Leonard Schenk depicts an allegorical figure representing Zedigheid, or Modesty. The work follows the tradition of personification common in eighteenth-century European art, where abstract virtues are rendered as human figures accompanied by specific symbolic attributes. The central figure is a woman draped in flowing, classical garments, her posture conveying a sense of quiet reserve. She holds a staff topped with a sunburst containing an eye, a traditional iconographic element associated with divine watchfulness or moral clarity.
The composition is structured with a clear foreground figure against a simplified background, which includes a small, secondary scene of a figure in a rocky setting. Schenk employs a linear etching technique, using varied hatching to define the folds of the fabric and the contours of the figure. The print is marked with the title at the bottom centre and a numeral in the lower right corner, suggesting it was part of a larger series of allegorical prints intended for educational or moral instruction. The style reflects the influence of earlier Dutch and Flemish print traditions, prioritising clarity of form and symbolic legibility over atmospheric depth. The figure's expression is calm, aligning with the concept of modesty as a balanced and composed state of being. This print offers a clear example of how moral concepts were visualised for a broad audience during the period, utilising classical tropes to communicate virtues. The work remains a representative specimen of the print culture in the Netherlands during the early eighteenth century, where such allegories were frequently produced for collectors and students of iconography.
