A 1923 Futurist work by Giacomo Balla that contrasts sharp, angular forms with fluid, circular shapes to represent the concepts of pessimism and optimism.
Giacomo Balla, a central figure in the Italian Futurist movement, created this work in 1923. The composition is divided into two distinct visual fields that represent opposing psychological states. On the left, sharp, angular, and jagged forms in black, grey, and white dominate the space. These aggressive shapes convey a sense of tension and discord, which the artist associates with pessimism. The forms here are static and pointed, creating a visual language of conflict.
In contrast, the right side of the canvas features fluid, curvilinear, and overlapping blue shapes. These forms suggest movement, expansion, and lightness, embodying the concept of optimism. Balla uses the interplay of these two halves to explore the Futurist interest in representing abstract concepts through geometric abstraction rather than traditional figurative depiction. The work reflects the artist's transition from his earlier studies of speed and light toward a more purely non-representational style.
Balla was deeply interested in the scientific and philosophical underpinnings of perception. By juxtaposing these two distinct modes of expression, he invites the viewer to consider how emotional states can be translated into visual form. The painting is a clear example of his ability to reduce complex human experiences into a series of rhythmic, geometric interactions. The work is currently held in the collection of the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome, where it remains a significant example of the later phase of Italian Futurism. The clear separation of the two halves allows for a direct comparison of the two emotional states, demonstrating Balla's mastery of balance and contrast within an abstract framework.
