Description
A Sienese School pinnacle panel featuring an angel, executed in tempera and gold leaf on wood, dating to the mid-fourteenth century.
This work is a pinnacle, a triangular panel designed to sit at the apex of a larger polyptych altarpiece. Niccolò di Segna, an active member of the Sienese School during the mid-fourteenth century, produced this piece with the characteristic stylistic traits of the period. The figure of the angel occupies the triangular frame, a format that dictates the composition and forces a compact, vertical orientation. The angel is rendered with the soft, elongated features typical of Sienese painting. The artist employs tempera, a medium that allows for precise, layered application of colour. The background consists of tooled gold leaf, which reflects light to create a celestial atmosphere. This technique was common in religious works of the era, intended to separate the sacred figure from the mundane world. The angel holds a slender rod, a detail often associated with messengers or attendants in divine scenes. Niccolò di Segna was influenced by the work of Duccio and Simone Martini, adopting their focus on linear grace and decorative detail. The drapery of the angel's robes is handled with subtle shading, providing a sense of volume despite the flat, two-dimensional nature of the panel. The halo is incised into the gold ground with a decorative pattern, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship required for such commissions. This panel provides a view into the structural hierarchy of medieval altarpieces, where individual components were assembled to form a unified theological narrative. The preservation of the gold leaf and the pigment remains a record of the materials and techniques employed in Sienese workshops during the Trecento.
