A detailed 1878 oil painting by José María Velasco depicting the ancient pyramids of Teotihuacan within the rugged Mexican terrain.
José María Velasco remains one of the most significant figures in nineteenth-century Mexican art. His approach to the natural world combined rigorous scientific observation with a disciplined academic technique. This work depicts the ancient site of Teotihuacan, focusing on the two primary structures: the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. Velasco captures the arid, rugged terrain of the Valley of Mexico with precision, documenting the vegetation and the geological features of the region.
The composition employs a wide, panoramic view that draws the eye across the scrubland towards the monumental pyramids. Velasco uses a palette of earthy ochres, browns, and muted greens to ground the scene in reality. The sky, filled with soft, light-filled clouds, provides a sense of atmospheric depth that balances the solid, geometric forms of the archaeological structures. Unlike the romanticised depictions common in European art of the period, Velasco presents the site with a sense of quiet, objective clarity.
His training at the Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City is evident in the careful construction of the space and the handling of light. Velasco often integrated his interest in botany and geology into his paintings, ensuring that the flora and terrain were rendered with accuracy. This piece reflects his broader project of documenting the Mexican geography during a period of national identity formation. By focusing on the pre-Hispanic heritage of the country, Velasco connected the physical environment to the historical narrative of the region. The result is a work that functions as both a topographical record and a formal study of light and form within the Mexican high plateau.
