A pair of etchings from Hubert Robert's Les Soirées de Rome, featuring classical ruins and busts set amidst overgrown vegetation.
This print features the first two plates from the series Les Soirées de Rome, a collection of etchings produced by Hubert Robert during his extended residency in Italy. Robert, often referred to as Robert des Ruines, spent over a decade in Rome, where he absorbed the aesthetic of classical antiquity and the picturesque decay of the city. These works demonstrate his fascination with the juxtaposition of man-made structures and the encroaching natural world.
The first plate serves as the frontispiece, presenting a stone monument draped in vegetation, topped with a classical urn. The inscription identifies the dedication to the Comte de Caylus, a figure of significant influence in the study of antiquities. The second plate depicts a marble bust resting upon a pedestal, surrounded by dense foliage and scattered architectural fragments. The composition reflects the artist's ability to balance precise draughtsmanship with a sense of atmospheric melancholy.
Robert utilised etching to capture the textures of weathered stone, moss, and tangled vines. His line work is delicate yet confident, allowing for a play of light and shadow that defines the forms within the frame. The inclusion of broken vessels and overgrown ruins is characteristic of his broader body of work, which often explored the passage of time through the lens of classical architecture. These prints provide a glimpse into the eighteenth-century European fascination with the Roman past, a period when artists and travellers alike sought to document the remnants of a bygone era. This museum-grade print preserves the fine detail of the original copperplate, offering an authentic representation of Robert's graphic style.
