Description
A mezzotint by Wallerant Vaillant depicts Plato and Aristotle in classical robes. The print showcases Vaillant's mastery of the mezzotint technique, with its subtle gradations of light and shadow.
This mezzotint by Wallerant Vaillant presents the philosophers Plato and Aristotle in a classical style. Vaillant, a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker, was a leading exponent of the mezzotint technique, known for its rich tonal range. This print exemplifies his skill in the medium. The composition depicts Plato on the left, identifiable by his age and raised hand, a gesture often associated with his theory of Forms. Aristotle stands to his right, holding a book, symbolising his empirical approach to knowledge. Both figures are draped in classical robes, set against a neutral background that focuses attention on their figures and expressions. The use of mezzotint allows for subtle gradations of light and shadow, adding depth and volume to the figures. The print reflects the 17th-century interest in classical antiquity and the enduring influence of Greek philosophy on European thought.

Wallerant Vaillant
He was born in Lille in 1623, the eldest of five brothers who all became painters. He trained under Erasmus Quellinus II in Antwerp and worked as a portraitist in Amsterdam, with extended stays in Paris from 1659 to 1664.
