A refined woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi depicting a social scene on a pleasure boat along the Sumida River.
This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi captures a scene of leisure on the Sumida River, a frequent subject in Edo-period art. Eishi, a former samurai who transitioned to the ukiyo-e school, is recognised for his refined depictions of women, often referred to as bijin-ga. In this composition, the artist employs a split-level perspective to show both the exterior deck of the boat and the interior cabin.
The upper section features figures relaxing on the roof of the vessel, while the lower portion reveals a group of women engaged in conversation and music within the sheltered cabin. The artist uses a muted palette, typical of the period, to convey the atmosphere of a summer evening on the water. The lines are precise and controlled, reflecting the technical skill required in the production of multi-block colour prints. The architectural elements, such as the bridge and the distant buildings, provide a sense of place, grounding the figures in the urban environment of Edo.
Eishi moved away from the more exaggerated proportions seen in earlier works by other artists, opting instead for a more slender and elegant figure type. This print demonstrates his ability to balance human activity with the surrounding environment. The composition relies on the interplay between the horizontal lines of the boat and the gentle, rhythmic curves of the water below. By focusing on the social dynamics of the passengers, the work offers a glimpse into the recreational habits of the period, where boating on the Sumida was a popular pastime for the urban population. The print remains a clear example of the aesthetic priorities of the late eighteenth-century Japanese print tradition, prioritising grace and social observation over dramatic action.
