Description
Porth in south Wales fills a meeting of green valleys, its pale terraces and crossing roads seen below golden hillside grass under warm light on a summer afternoon.
Porth stands where the Rhondda Fawr and Rhondda Fach valleys meet. Coal mining transformed the earlier rural settlement during the nineteenth century, bringing rows of workers’ houses to the slopes. The railway junction strengthened the town’s role as a gateway for trade through the Rhondda.
Golden grass slopes away from the foreground into a town of closely spaced pale terraces and red brick roofs. Roads divide the valley floor, with a light-coloured modern bridge crossing near the centre. Green and gold hills rise on both sides, carrying the streets into the distance beneath soft clouds and the long shadows of summer afternoon light.
