A refined woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi, depicting a courtesan from his series The Six Immortal Poets in Modern Dress.
This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi depicts a courtesan, a figure central to the floating world of Edo-period Japan. Eishi, a former official in the shogunate, transitioned to printmaking and became known for his refined portrayals of women. This work belongs to the series The Six Immortal Poets in Modern Dress, a project that reimagines classical literary figures within the contemporary social context of the Yoshiwara pleasure district.
The composition focuses on the upper torso and head of the subject, who is shown in a three-quarter profile. Her hair is styled in an elaborate fashion, adorned with numerous hairpins, which signals her status and profession. She holds a slender pipe, a common accessory in such portraits, which adds a sense of quietude to the scene. The artist employs a delicate line quality, characteristic of his style, to define the facial features and the folds of the kimono. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft earth tones and subtle washes that allow the printed lines to remain the primary focus.
Eishi often favoured elongated figures and a sense of grace that departed from the more robust depictions found in earlier ukiyo-e works. The inclusion of calligraphic elements in the upper left corner provides a balance to the figure, integrating text with the visual image. This print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, where each colour block is aligned to create a cohesive image. The work offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the late eighteenth century, where the lives of courtesans were elevated to the status of poetic subjects. It remains a representative example of the artist's contribution to the genre of bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women.
