This watercolour portrait, attributed to Pieter de Grebber and dated 1736, presents a man in profile, wearing a beret. De Grebber, a Dutch Golden Age painter, was known for his contributions to history painting and portraiture. This work, executed in watercolour on paper, showcases the artist's skill in capturing the likeness and character of his subject. The man's features are rendered with delicate lines and subtle shading, conveying a sense of age and experience. The portrait is framed within an oval border, adding to its formal presentation. The inscription below the portrait identifies the artist and the year of creation. The use of watercolour allows for a soft, translucent quality, enhancing the overall effect of the portrait. The limited colour palette, dominated by greys and browns, contributes to the work's understated elegance. The portrait offers a glimpse into the artistic practices of the Dutch Golden Age, demonstrating the period's interest in realistic representation and the human form. The work's intimate scale and delicate execution make it a compelling example of 18th-century portraiture.
