A refined seventeenth-century portrait etching by Dutch artist Theodor Matham, capturing a woman in traditional attire with precise line work.
This portrait by Theodor Matham displays the technical precision characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age. Matham, a member of a notable family of engravers, demonstrates his command of line and shadow in this study of a woman, traditionally identified as Maria Matham. The subject is presented within an oval frame, a common convention for seventeenth-century portraiture that directs the viewer's attention to the sitter's features and attire.
The woman wears a modest cap and a distinctive cape, or tippet, fastened with small bows. The texture of the fabric is rendered through fine hatching and cross-hatching, techniques that allow the artist to suggest the weight of the textile and the subtle folds of the garment. Her expression is composed, and her gaze meets the viewer with directness. The use of light creates a gentle modelling of her face, while the background remains relatively neutral, ensuring the focus stays on the individual.
As an engraver, Matham was part of a tradition that prioritised clarity and detail. This print reflects the period's interest in documenting the appearance of individuals from the middle and upper classes. The work is executed with a disciplined hand, showing the controlled application of the burin and etching needle. The monochromatic palette, typical of period prints, relies on the tonal variations of the ink against the paper to define form and depth. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the mid-seventeenth century, where personal identity was often captured through formal, restrained portraiture.
