A detailed eighteenth-century engraving of the naturalist Albertus Seba, surrounded by his collection of biological specimens.
This engraving depicts the Dutch pharmacist and zoologist Albertus Seba, surrounded by the specimens that defined his career. Jacobus Houbraken, a master of the Dutch portrait engraving tradition, captures Seba at the age of sixty-six. The subject is presented in a scholarly environment, gesturing toward an open volume filled with natural history illustrations. His collection of preserved specimens, housed in glass jars on shelves behind him, provides a visual catalogue of his scientific pursuits. The composition balances the formal portraiture of the eighteenth century with the curiosity-driven aesthetic of the Enlightenment.
Seba was a collector of global renown, and his cabinet of curiosities was one of the most comprehensive in Amsterdam. The print reflects this obsession with classification and display. The hand-coloured details, from the deep crimson of his robe to the muted tones of the preserved specimens, offer a glimpse into the visual culture of early scientific study. Houbraken employs precise line work to define the textures of the fabric, the glass vessels, and the biological forms on the table. The inclusion of Latin inscriptions beneath the portrait provides the necessary context for his professional titles and the date of the work. This piece is a record of the intersection between art and science during the eighteenth century, documenting both the individual and the era's hunger for empirical knowledge.
