A refined 1898 oil portrait of the Russian artist Alexandre Benois by his contemporary, Leon Bakst, capturing a quiet moment of intellectual study.
This portrait depicts the Russian artist and critic Alexandre Benois, a central figure in the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) movement. Painted by his close associate Leon Bakst in 1898, the work captures Benois in a moment of quiet study. He is seated in a large, dark armchair, his attention fixed upon a document or book held in his hands. The composition is restrained, focusing on the intellectual character of the subject rather than grand artifice.
Bakst employs a muted palette, dominated by deep blues, browns, and soft ochre tones. The lighting is focused, illuminating Benois's face and the white paper he holds, which creates a natural contrast against the darker surroundings. In the background, a framed portrait of a woman hangs on the wall, providing a subtle layer of visual interest without distracting from the primary subject. The brushwork is controlled, reflecting the academic training Bakst received before he became better known for his later, more decorative work with the Ballets Russes.
Alexandre Benois was a significant influence on the Russian cultural scene at the turn of the century. As a founder of the World of Art group, he advocated for a return to classical aesthetics and a rejection of the utilitarian art favoured by the preceding generation. This portrait serves as a record of the personal and professional connection between two men who shaped the direction of early twentieth-century Russian art. The work remains a clear example of the portraiture style prevalent among the Mir Iskusstva circle, where psychological depth and a refined, painterly approach were prioritised over the more radical experiments occurring elsewhere in Europe at the time.
