A detailed Baroque engraving depicting Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, surrounded by allegorical figures and classical architectural motifs.
This engraving depicts Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, a figure of significant influence in seventeenth-century Rome. The composition follows the conventions of Baroque portraiture, placing the subject within a central oval frame. This frame is supported by allegorical figures, including a representation of Minerva on the left, who gestures towards the cardinal, and a river god on the right, accompanied by a wolf and putti. The inclusion of these classical motifs connects the cardinal to the intellectual and historical traditions of the city. Above the portrait, putti hold a banner bearing a Latin inscription that identifies the cardinal and his relationship to Pope Alexander VIII. The background features architectural elements, such as columns and ruins, which provide a sense of place and historical weight. The print was produced by the workshop of Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi, a prolific publisher in Rome known for disseminating high-quality prints of contemporary figures and classical subjects. The technical execution demonstrates the precision of the burin, with fine hatching used to create volume in the drapery and depth in the surrounding figures. The work functions as a formal presentation of status, using iconography to communicate the cardinal's authority and his alignment with the cultural prestige of the Roman Church. The balanced arrangement of the figures around the central portrait creates a sense of order, typical of the period's preference for structured, symbolic imagery. This print serves as a record of the visual language employed by the Roman elite to document their position within the ecclesiastical hierarchy.
