A detailed mezzotint portrait of the Dutch painter Jan van Huysum, shown in his studio with his signature floral work visible on an easel.
This mezzotint by Arnoud van Halen depicts the celebrated Dutch painter Jan van Huysum. Van Huysum was widely recognised for his meticulous still-life compositions, particularly those featuring flowers and fruit. In this portrait, the artist is shown in a studio setting, positioned behind a stone plinth that serves as a base for the composition. He wears a voluminous periwig and a loose, flowing garment, typical of the formal portraiture of the early eighteenth century. To the right of the sitter, an easel displays one of Van Huysum's characteristic floral arrangements, providing a visual reference to his professional identity. The artist holds a small sketch or print, further connecting the subject to his craft. The lower section of the print features a stone pedestal inscribed with a laudatory poem in Dutch, which praises Van Huysum's ability to capture nature with such precision that he surpasses the masters of antiquity. The base is decorated with carved fruit and foliage, echoing the themes found in the painter's own work. Van Halen utilised the mezzotint technique to achieve soft transitions between light and shadow, creating a sense of volume and texture in the drapery and the stone elements. The lighting is focused on the face of the sitter, drawing the eye to his expression, while the surrounding environment remains in a lower tonal register. This print provides a glimpse into the professional self-presentation of a Dutch artist during the final stages of the Golden Age, documenting both the physical appearance of the painter and the high regard in which his botanical studies were held by his contemporaries.
