An eighteenth-century engraving by Georg Friedrich Schmidt depicting the mathematician Johann Bernoulli, framed with a decorative cartouche and verse by Voltaire.
This engraving by Georg Friedrich Schmidt depicts the Swiss mathematician Johann Bernoulli. Schmidt, a Berlin-born artist who spent significant time in Paris, was highly regarded for his technical precision in the medium of copperplate engraving. This work demonstrates his ability to render texture and form through controlled hatching and cross-hatching techniques.
Bernoulli is presented within an oval frame, a common convention for eighteenth-century portraiture. He wears a periwig and period-appropriate attire, holding a scroll that suggests his professional identity as a scholar. The frame itself is set against a stone-like background, adding a sense of architectural weight to the composition. Below the portrait, a decorative cartouche contains a verse by Voltaire, which praises Bernoulli for his intellectual contributions and moral character. The inclusion of this text links the visual representation of the subject to his public reputation during the Enlightenment.
Schmidt captures the sitter with a focus on clarity and formal balance. The lines are fine and deliberate, creating subtle gradations of shadow that define the folds of the clothing and the contours of the face. The work was published in Lausanne and Geneva by Marc-Michel Bousquet, reflecting the international circulation of scientific and intellectual figures during this period. As a piece of historical documentation, the print provides insight into the visual culture surrounding the European scientific community in the mid-eighteenth century. The technical execution reflects the high standards of the period, where the engraver functioned as a skilled interpreter of the original painted portrait, in this case after a work by J. Huber.
