A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Theodor de Bry depicting the physician and alchemist Paracelsus within an ornate, symbolic frame.
This engraving by Theodor de Bry depicts the Swiss physician and alchemist Paracelsus. The subject is presented within an oval frame, a common convention for portraiture during the late sixteenth century. Paracelsus is shown in a three-quarter view, his hand resting upon the pommel of a sword, which was a characteristic attribute associated with him. His expression is serious, reflecting the gravity of his reputation as a controversial figure in medical history.
The surrounding frame is highly decorative, featuring grotesque figures and floral motifs that demonstrate the technical precision of de Bry. The Latin inscription encircling the portrait identifies the subject as Theophrastus Paracelsus, while the cartouche at the base contains a couplet praising his mastery of the mysteries of the world and his alchemical knowledge. The use of cross-hatching and fine lines creates a sense of volume in the clothing and depth in the facial features, typical of the period's printmaking techniques.
De Bry was a skilled engraver and publisher, known for his work on travel accounts and historical portraits. This print captures the intellectual climate of the Renaissance, where scientific inquiry and classical symbolism often intersected. The clarity of the lines and the balanced composition make this an excellent example of Northern Renaissance graphic art. It provides a window into how historical figures were memorialised through the medium of the printed image, circulating ideas and likenesses across Europe during a period of rapid intellectual change.
