A 1639 portrait engraving of Pierre Séguier, Chancellor of France, by the French master Claude Mellan.
This engraving by Claude Mellan depicts Pierre Séguier, the Chancellor of France, in a formal portrait dated 1639. Mellan is recognised for his distinct approach to the burin, often employing a single line of varying thickness to create form and shadow, rather than the traditional cross-hatching methods common among his contemporaries. In this work, the subject is presented in three-quarter view against a background subtly patterned with fleur-de-lis, a motif that reinforces his position within the French state hierarchy.
The technical precision of the engraving allows for a clear rendering of the textures within Séguier's attire, from the smooth fabric of his robes to the crisp edges of his collar. Mellan captures the facial features with a sense of directness, focusing on the contours of the face and the specific fall of light across the sitter's features. The inscription at the base, identifying the subject as 'Petrus Segvier Francia Cancellarius', follows the conventions of seventeenth-century portraiture, where the identity and status of the individual are clearly stated for the viewer.
Claude Mellan spent a significant period in Rome, where he absorbed the influence of Italian masters before returning to Paris. His work reflects a transition from the more painterly styles of the early seventeenth century toward a cleaner, more linear aesthetic. This portrait is an example of his mature style, where the economy of line does not sacrifice the psychological presence of the sitter. The print demonstrates the capacity of the engraving medium to convey both the authority of a public figure and the individual character of the man. It remains a study in the control of light and shadow through disciplined, deliberate mark-making, characteristic of Mellan's contribution to the history of French printmaking.
