A detailed 17th-century engraving by Theodor Matham, capturing the likeness of Dutch statesman Reinier Adriaensz. Pauw.
This engraving by Theodor Matham depicts Reinier Adriaensz. Pauw, a prominent figure in the Dutch Republic, at the age of 67. Matham, a skilled printmaker of the Dutch Golden Age, captures the subject with precision, focusing on the textures of the period attire. The sitter wears a large, pleated ruff, a hallmark of seventeenth-century European fashion, which frames his face and directs the viewer's attention to his expression. His coat, trimmed with fur, suggests his status and wealth within the Amsterdam political sphere.
The composition is contained within an oval frame, a common device in portrait prints of the era. The surrounding border includes Latin inscriptions that detail the subject's titles and roles, including his service as a consul and senator of Amsterdam, as well as his diplomatic work for the States General. The use of hatching and cross-hatching techniques allows Matham to model the facial features and the folds of the ruff, creating a sense of volume and physical presence.
Matham based this work on a painting by Jan van Ravesteyn, a painter known for his portraits of the Dutch elite. The print serves as a record of the sitter's appearance and social standing. The clarity of the line work reflects the technical standards of Dutch printmaking during this period, where the collaboration between painters and engravers was common to disseminate images of public figures. This piece offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Dutch Republic, where portraiture functioned as a means of documenting the lives of those who held administrative and political power.
