Description
A 1661 mezzotint by Jan Thomas, capturing the Venetian master Titian in a detailed profile portrait.
This mezzotint by the Flemish artist Jan Thomas, dated 1661, depicts the Venetian master Titian in profile. Thomas, a pupil of Peter Paul Rubens, was among the earliest practitioners of the mezzotint technique, a method that allows for subtle gradations of tone by roughening the metal plate. This specific work demonstrates the technical control required to render the soft texture of the fur collar and the deep shadows of the background, which contrast with the illuminated features of the subject. The composition is based on the traditional iconography of Titian, presenting him as an elderly, bearded figure wearing a cap. The inscription at the base of the print identifies the subject and provides a dedication to Empress Eleonora of Hungary and Bohemia. By choosing this subject, Thomas aligns himself with the tradition of the great masters, using the medium of printmaking to disseminate the image of a historical figure to a wider audience. The play of light across the face and the beard is achieved through the dense, velvety blacks characteristic of early mezzotint work, creating a sense of volume and presence. Jan Thomas spent much of his career in Vienna, where he served the imperial court. His work in printmaking helped to introduce new tonal possibilities to the medium, moving away from the purely linear approach of engraving. This portrait is a clear example of his ability to translate the painterly qualities of oil portraits into the graphic arts. The print remains a significant object for those interested in the history of printmaking techniques and the reception of Renaissance masters during the seventeenth century.
