A detailed eighteenth-century engraving by Jan Punt depicting Alessandro Farnese, Duke of Parma, in formal armour and a ruff collar.
This portrait of Alessandro Farnese, Duke of Parma, is an etching and engraving by the Dutch artist Jan Punt. The work depicts the Duke within an oval frame, set atop a plinth that bears a Latin inscription identifying him as the Governor of the Netherlands. The print captures the subject in a three-quarter view, wearing a ruff collar and armour, reflecting the fashion of the late sixteenth century.
Jan Punt was a prolific engraver and actor based in Amsterdam. His work often involved the reproduction of historical figures for biographical publications. This specific print was created for a multi-volume historical work, as evidenced by the page number and volume designation at the top of the sheet. The technique demonstrates the precision characteristic of eighteenth-century Dutch printmaking, where cross-hatching and varied line weights define the textures of the metal armour and the soft fabric of the ruff.
Alessandro Farnese (1545-1592) was a significant military commander during the Eighty Years' War. His role as Governor of the Netherlands made him a frequent subject for historical documentation in the Low Countries. Punt’s interpretation relies on earlier iconographic traditions, presenting the Duke with a stern expression and formal posture. The composition is balanced, with the oval frame providing a clear separation between the subject and the architectural base. The print serves as a record of historical portraiture, documenting how figures from the Renaissance were visualised by artists in the Enlightenment era. The clarity of the lines and the structured approach to shading provide a clear view of the subject's features and attire, making this an example of the technical skill applied to historical illustration during the period.
