A formal portrait engraving of the French politician Antoine Jean François Ménager by Ambroise Tardieu, dating to circa 1818.
This engraving by Ambroise Tardieu depicts Antoine Jean François Ménager, a French politician who served as a deputy for the Seine-et-Marne department. The work dates to the period following his election in 1818. Tardieu, a member of a prominent family of cartographers and engravers, utilised the stipple engraving technique to achieve a soft, tonal quality in the portrait. This method allows for subtle gradations of light and shadow, particularly visible in the modelling of the subject's face and the texture of his coat.
The composition follows the conventions of early nineteenth-century portraiture, presenting the sitter within a simple oval frame. This format focuses the viewer's attention entirely on the subject, whose expression is composed and direct. Below the portrait, the text identifies the sitter as 'M. le Bn Ménager', noting his political role and the year of his election. The clarity of the lettering and the precision of the lines reflect the technical standards of the period, where such prints were often produced for documentation or as illustrations for biographical collections.
Ambroise Tardieu was known for his ability to translate painted portraits into the medium of print with high fidelity. His work often appeared in publications documenting the political and social figures of the Bourbon Restoration. This print provides a clear example of the formal portrait style favoured by the French bourgeoisie during this era. The clean presentation and the focus on the sitter's features make it a representative piece of historical portraiture from the early nineteenth century. The print is preserved in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, demonstrating its historical value as a record of the political figures of the time.
