An eighteenth-century etching by Jan Punt depicting Philippe III de Croÿ, Duke of Aarschot, in a formal profile portrait bust.
This portrait depicts Philippe III de Croÿ, Duke of Aarschot, a prominent figure in the sixteenth-century Low Countries. The print is the work of Jan Punt, a Dutch engraver active during the eighteenth century. Punt produced this image for a historical publication, as indicated by the page numbering and volume reference at the top of the sheet. The composition follows the tradition of the oval portrait bust, a format common in historical documentation and biographical collections of the era.
The subject is shown in profile, facing right, wearing the armour appropriate to his status as a military leader and governor. The ruff collar, characteristic of late sixteenth-century fashion, provides a contrast to the metallic surface of the breastplate. Punt employs precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the contours of the face, the texture of the beard, and the reflective quality of the steel armour. The surrounding oval frame is set upon a pedestal base, which contains the subject's name, titles, and the year of his death in Latin script.
Jan Punt was known for his technical proficiency in reproducing historical figures for printed volumes. His approach here is functional and clear, prioritising legibility and accurate representation of the subject's features and heraldic status. The print serves as a visual record of a historical personality, stripped of extraneous decorative elements to focus on the identity of the sitter. The use of light and shadow within the oval creates a sense of volume, while the background remains neutral to ensure the figure remains the primary focus. This piece is an example of the eighteenth-century interest in documenting the lineage and history of European nobility through the medium of the printed portrait.
