A formal eighteenth-century engraving by Jan Punt depicting the French Huguenot leader Gaspard de Coligny within a classical architectural frame.
This print by the Dutch artist Jan Punt depicts Gaspard de Coligny, the French Huguenot leader who perished during the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre in 1572. Punt, active in the mid-eighteenth century, produced this work as part of a larger historical series, likely intended for a biographical publication. The composition follows the tradition of the commemorative portrait, placing the subject within a trompe l'oeil oval frame that rests upon a stone plinth.
The engraving technique demonstrates the precision characteristic of eighteenth-century Dutch printmaking. Punt employs a system of cross-hatching to define the contours of Coligny's face and the texture of his sixteenth-century doublet. The subject is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing a flat cap and a high-collared garment, which reflects the fashion of the period in which Coligny lived. The plinth below the portrait contains a formal inscription in Dutch, identifying the subject as the Admiral of France and noting his death date in Roman numerals.
As a printmaker, Punt was known for his ability to translate historical figures into a consistent visual language suitable for scholarly texts. The work is devoid of unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the clarity of the likeness and the formal presentation of the sitter's identity. The background within the oval is filled with a fine grid pattern, which provides a neutral contrast to the figure and ensures that the viewer's attention remains fixed on the portrait. This piece is an example of how historical figures were memorialised in print during the Enlightenment, where the dissemination of biographical information was often accompanied by such formalised, graphic representations. The print retains the original page numbering and section headers, indicating its origin as a plate from a bound volume.
