Description
Painted between 1851 and 1859, Ford Madox Brown's *Pretty Baa-Lambs* is an oil on canvas depicting a woman and child in a field with sheep, rendered in the bright colours and clear light typical of the Pre-Raphaelite style.
Ford Madox Brown's oil on canvas, *Pretty Baa-Lambs*, was painted between 1851 and 1859. Brown was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, although he was never formally a member. The painting depicts a woman in a light blue dress, holding a child, standing in a field with sheep. Another woman is seated on the left, gathering plants. The scene is set against a backdrop of rolling hills and a bright blue sky. The composition is carefully arranged, with the figures and animals placed to create a sense of balance and harmony. The artist's attention to detail is evident in the rendering of the clothing, the sheep's wool, and the foliage. The painting is a genre scene, depicting everyday life, but it also has a symbolic dimension. The sheep may represent innocence and purity, while the woman and child may represent motherhood and family. The painting is a celebration of the beauty of nature and the simple pleasures of life. The bright colours and clear light create a sense of optimism and hope. The work is currently held in the Birmingham Museums Trust collection.

Artist Biography
Ford Madox Brown
He was born in Calais in 1821, trained across Europe, and settled in London. Though never an official member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, he was their most important older ally and the teacher who most shaped their ambitions. His insistence on painting outdoors in natural light, often to the point of physical discomfort, and his dense, moralising compositions made him a bridge between the Nazarenes he had studied with in Rome and the young English radicals who followed.
He also designed stained glass and furniture for Morris and Co. He died in 1893, at seventy-two.
