A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Rekisentei Eiri, depicting figures in traditional Heian-period attire crossing a bridge.
This woodblock print by Rekisentei Eiri depicts a scene inspired by the Tale of Genji, a classic work of Japanese literature. The composition focuses on three figures, likely courtiers or attendants, moving across a wooden bridge structure. The artist employs the characteristic Ukiyo-e style of the late eighteenth century, prioritising clean lines and flat areas of colour to define the figures and their elaborate garments.
The figures are dressed in traditional Heian-period attire, featuring voluminous robes with patterned underskirts. Their faces are rendered with the stylised, elongated features common to the period, conveying a sense of refined composure. The background includes a stone wall, suggesting the exterior of a palace or estate, which provides a structural contrast to the fluid lines of the clothing. The use of a limited, balanced palette allows the viewer to focus on the interplay of shapes and the rhythmic repetition of the figures' postures.
Rekisentei Eiri was active during the late eighteenth century and is associated with the school of Chōbunsai Eishi. His work often explored themes from classical literature, adapting them for the contemporary audience of the Edo period. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, where each colour block is carefully aligned to create the final image. The absence of deep perspective is typical of the period, as the artist prefers to arrange the subjects in a decorative, planar fashion. This print offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the time, where historical narratives were frequently reinterpreted through the lens of popular print culture. The attention to textile patterns and the precise rendering of the headgear reflect the artist's focus on the material culture of the aristocracy, even when presented in a stylised, accessible format.
