A detailed woodblock triptych by Utagawa Kunisada depicting figures in traditional dress at the Gankirō tea house.
This triptych by Utagawa Kunisada depicts a scene from the Genji-e genre, which adapts the classical Tale of Genji into the contemporary setting of the Edo period. The composition spans three sheets, presenting a narrative sequence where Prince Genji and his companions navigate the Gankirō tea house. The figures are dressed in elaborate, patterned kimonos, reflecting the fashion of the mid-nineteenth century.
Kunisada employs a balanced arrangement of figures against a backdrop of cherry blossoms and architectural elements. The use of colour is deliberate, with muted tones for the structures and more saturated hues for the garments of the subjects. The print captures the social atmosphere of the pleasure districts, a common subject for Ukiyo-e artists of the time. The inclusion of lanterns and floral details adds to the decorative quality of the work, while the figures maintain a formal, posed appearance typical of the actor and bijin-ga traditions.
As one of the most prolific designers of his era, Kunisada produced numerous series based on the Genji narrative. This specific work demonstrates his technical skill in woodblock printing, particularly in the layering of colours and the precision of the line work. The triptych format allows for a wider view of the environment, providing context to the interactions between the characters. The print remains a representative example of the late Edo period aesthetic, where literary themes were frequently reinterpreted through the lens of popular culture and urban life.
