A masterful ink wash painting by the Qing dynasty artist Shitao, depicting a gnarled plum tree emerging from behind a weathered rock.
Shitao, born Zhu Ruoji, remains one of the most influential figures of the early Qing dynasty. As a member of the Ming imperial clan who became a Buddhist monk, his life was marked by political upheaval and personal displacement. This work, Prunus among the Rocks, exemplifies his mastery of ink wash techniques and his rejection of rigid orthodox styles. The composition features a gnarled plum tree emerging from behind a massive, weathered rock formation. The artist employs varied brushwork: dry, scratchy strokes define the texture of the stone, while fluid, calligraphic lines capture the twisting branches of the prunus. The plum blossom, a traditional symbol of resilience in Chinese art, appears here with a sense of spontaneity and raw energy. Shitao often integrated his own poetry into his paintings, and the calligraphy present on the left side of the composition serves as a visual and intellectual extension of the image. The ink tones range from deep, saturated blacks to subtle, watery greys, creating a sense of depth without the use of traditional perspective. This piece reflects the artist's philosophy of the 'single brushstroke', a concept he explored in his theoretical writings, which prioritised the internal state of the painter over the mere imitation of nature. By focusing on the expressive potential of the medium, Shitao created works that feel immediate and personal. The balance between the solid, heavy mass of the rock and the delicate, reaching limbs of the tree creates a dynamic tension. This print captures the nuances of the original ink application, allowing for a close examination of the artist's hand and the subtle variations in tone that define this classic example of literati painting.
