The scene depicts the coastal area of Le Brusc in the south of France, a location that offered the artist ample opportunity to study the effects of strong Mediterranean winds on the local flora. The composition is dominated by a single, wind-swept tree, its trunk and branches twisted into an expressive, rhythmic form. Guillaumin employs thick, visible brushstrokes to convey the movement of the air and the texture of the foliage. The ground is rendered in patches of yellow and ochre, suggesting the parched earth of the region, while the sea is captured in varying shades of blue and white, indicating the turbulence of the waves against the rocky shore.
