A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Marcus de Bye, depicting a mother goat and her kid resting in a pastoral setting.
This etching by Marcus de Bye captures a quiet moment in a rural setting. A mother goat rests on the ground, while her kid sits positioned behind her. De Bye, a Dutch artist active during the seventeenth century, specialised in the depiction of animals. His work often appeared in series, focusing on livestock and domestic creatures within the Dutch countryside.
The composition relies on fine, precise lines to define the texture of the goats' coats and the surrounding terrain. De Bye employs hatching and cross-hatching techniques to create shadow and volume, giving the animals a sense of physical presence despite the simplicity of the scene. The background remains sparse, featuring a few distant trees and a suggestion of rolling hills, which directs the viewer's attention to the central figures. Small birds are visible in the sky, adding a sense of scale to the open environment.
This print is part of a larger series of animal studies that were popular among collectors of the period. Such works were frequently used as models for other artists or as decorative pieces for domestic interiors. The technical execution reflects the high standards of Dutch printmaking during the era, where the focus remained on observation and the accurate rendering of form. The number '6' in the lower right corner indicates its place within a sequence of plates, a common practice for printmakers of the time who produced sets of related subjects. The work remains a clear example of the period's interest in natural history and the pastoral life, presented with a clean, graphic sensibility that translates well to modern framing.
