A study of light and water, this painting captures the distorted reflections of garden architecture in a fountain pool, rendered with expressive brushwork.
Joaquín Sorolla painted this work during his later years, a period when he turned his attention to the gardens of the Alcázar in Seville. The composition focuses entirely on the surface of the water, eschewing a traditional horizon line to create a flattened, abstract effect. The viewer sees the architecture of the garden only through its inverted reflection, distorted by the gentle ripples of the fountain.
Sorolla employs thick, directional brushwork to capture the movement of the water. The palette consists of earthy ochres, deep browns, and muted greens, punctuated by the dark, silhouette-like form of the fountain itself. By focusing on the interplay of light and liquid surface, Sorolla demonstrates his mastery of optical effects. The painting avoids literal representation in favour of capturing the fleeting nature of the scene. The architectural elements, such as the arches and columns, appear as fragmented shapes, dissolving into the fluid medium of the pool.
This work belongs to a series of garden studies that Sorolla produced between 1909 and 1918. These paintings represent a shift in his practice, moving away from his earlier large-scale social realist works toward a more personal, contemplative exploration of light and colour. The absence of human figures allows the viewer to engage directly with the atmospheric qualities of the garden. The painting functions as a study of perception, where the reflection becomes the primary subject, challenging the viewer to distinguish between the solid structure of the fountain and its ephemeral image on the water. The result is a work that feels modern in its approach to abstraction, while remaining grounded in the specific light and environment of the Andalusian landscape.
