A precise architectural drawing by Dirk Valkenburg documenting the Surimombo plantation in Suriname, featuring a numbered key and detailed timber structures.
This drawing by Dirk Valkenburg depicts the Surimombo plantation in Suriname, a site where the artist resided between 1706 and 1707. Valkenburg travelled to the Dutch colony to document the plantation for its owner, Jonas Witsen. The work functions as a technical record, employing a precise, linear style characteristic of colonial documentation from the early eighteenth century.
The composition is organised with a clear, horizontal focus. On the right, the primary residence is rendered with attention to its timber construction, shuttered windows, and roofline. To the left, a smaller barn structure is shown, accompanied by agricultural equipment. A numbered key in the upper left corner provides specific identification for the buildings and surrounding features, including the residence, cattle pen, and warehouse. The use of grey wash adds subtle volume to the structures, while the surrounding space remains largely empty, directing the viewer's attention to the architectural details.
Valkenburg was a pupil of Michael Sweerts and later specialised in still-life painting, yet his time in Suriname resulted in a unique body of topographical and ethnographic drawings. These works provide a rare visual account of the colonial infrastructure in the Caribbean during this period. The drawing is executed on paper, with the ink lines defining the structural elements and the wash providing depth to the shadows and textures of the thatched and shingled roofs. This piece is part of a larger series of drawings that document the daily operations and physical layout of the Surimombo estate, offering a glimpse into the colonial history of the region through the lens of Dutch administrative and artistic practice.
