A nineteenth-century albumen print by Giorgio Sommer documenting the ruins of the House of Meleager in Pompeii.
This albumen silver print by Giorgio Sommer captures the House of Meleager in Pompeii during the late nineteenth century. Sommer, a German photographer based in Naples, operated one of the most prolific studios in Italy during this period. His documentation of the excavations at Pompeii provided European audiences with a clear view of the archaeological site, which was then a subject of intense academic and public interest.
The composition focuses on a stone table base, carved with winged griffins, positioned in the foreground. Behind this, the peristyle of the house is visible, featuring columns that define the spatial arrangement of the Roman atrium. The photograph records the state of the ruins before further modern restoration efforts, preserving the weathered textures of the plaster walls and the structural remains of the columns. The lighting conditions create sharp shadows, which define the sculptural details of the table base against the dusty ground of the site.
Sommer utilised the albumen process, a standard technique for nineteenth-century travel and topographical photography. This method allowed for the reproduction of fine detail, making it suitable for documenting archaeological findings. The print is mounted on a page, typical of the albums Sommer produced for tourists and collectors. His work remains a primary source for understanding the appearance of Pompeii in the decades following the initial systematic excavations. The image provides a direct, unadorned view of the site, reflecting the documentary approach common to photographers of the era who sought to capture the reality of the ancient world for a contemporary audience.
