A tranquil riverbank at sunset by Edward Mitchell Bannister, featuring two figures in a small boat. The muted colour palette and soft brushstrokes create a hazy, dreamlike effect.
Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828-1901) was an African-American artist known for his atmospheric tonalist landscapes. Born in Canada, he spent most of his career in Boston and Providence, Rhode Island, becoming a prominent member of the local art scene. Bannister was a founding member of the Providence Art Club and received a bronze medal at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, a significant achievement for an African-American artist at the time. His work often depicts serene, pastoral settings, reflecting a sense of peace and contemplation. 'River Scene' exemplifies Bannister's characteristic style. The painting presents a tranquil riverbank at sunset. Two figures are in a small boat on the water. The composition is dominated by a large tree on the left, its foliage rendered in soft, blended brushstrokes. The colour palette is muted, with warm tones of gold, brown, and green creating a hazy, dreamlike effect. The sky glows with the setting sun, casting reflections on the water. The overall impression is one of quiet beauty and harmony with nature.
