He frequently utilised oilcloth as his primary surface, a material readily available in the taverns and shops of Tiflis where he worked. This specific piece features a roe deer positioned centrally against a simplified, stylised backdrop. The animal is rendered with a directness characteristic of his approach, focusing on the essential form and the expressive quality of the creature's gaze rather than anatomical precision.

The composition is divided into distinct horizontal zones. A pale, earthy foreground supports the deer, while the background consists of deep blue tones, suggesting a sky or distant horizon. The vegetation, including the dark tree trunks and foliage, is depicted with minimal detail, creating a stark contrast with the deer.
