A detailed fifteenth-century engraving by Martin Schongauer depicting Saint Anthony the Great with his traditional attributes.
Martin Schongauer, a German engraver and painter, produced this work during the latter half of the fifteenth century. As a master of the burin, Schongauer influenced the development of printmaking in Northern Europe. This engraving depicts Saint Anthony the Great, often identified as the first Christian hermit, accompanied by his traditional attribute, the pig. The saint holds a tau cross, which features a bell attached to its shaft.
The composition demonstrates Schongauer's technical control over the copper plate. He uses varied hatching techniques to define the folds of the saint's habit and the texture of the animal's coat. The figure stands against a plain background, which directs attention to the anatomical precision and the linear clarity of the drapery. The saint's expression is calm, reflecting the meditative life associated with his monastic tradition.
Schongauer's approach to form relies on the rhythmic application of lines to create volume and shadow. This method allowed for a level of detail that became a hallmark of his output. The work provides insight into the visual culture of the late medieval period, where religious figures were rendered with both symbolic accuracy and human presence. The inclusion of the pig, a common feature in iconography related to the Order of Saint Anthony, connects the image to the social and religious practices of the time. This print remains a representative example of the technical standards achieved by German printmakers before the turn of the sixteenth century.
