Description
Saint Asaph in Denbighshire centres on a square cathedral tower, seen above warm stone walls, green lawns and clustered roofs within a wider landscape of hedged fields.
Known in Welsh as Llanelwy, this cathedral city stands on the River Elwy near the Vale of Clwyd. Its small medieval cathedral is largely fourteenth century and is dedicated to Saint Asaph, the second bishop associated with the city's early religious community.
From above Saint Asaph, the cathedral's grey roof and battlemented tower rise between deep green trees. Pointed windows punctuate its warm pink-brown stone walls, and narrow lawns follow the building's outline. Closely packed houses surround the church precinct. Beyond the roofs, green fields extend towards blue hills under pale clouds, with the full foliage suggesting a sunny summer afternoon.
