Painted by Paul Signac in the Neo-Impressionist style, 'Saint-Briac, Le Balise du Cheval' captures a coastal scene in Brittany using the Pointillist technique. Small dots of colour create a shimmering effect, depicting the sea, rocks, and distant headland.
Paul Signac, a leading figure in Neo-Impressionism, painted 'Saint-Briac, Le Balise du Cheval' using the Pointillist technique he developed with Georges Seurat. Born in Paris, Signac experimented with colour theory and optical mixing, applying small, distinct dots of pure colour that merge in the viewer's eye to create a unified image. This approach aimed to achieve a greater luminosity than traditional methods of mixing paint on a palette. This painting depicts a coastal scene at Saint-Briac, Brittany, featuring the marker known as Le Cheval. The composition includes the sea, rocky outcrops, and a distant headland with buildings. Signac's application of colour creates a shimmering effect on the water, while the rocks are rendered with a mosaic of warm and cool tones. The sky is a blend of soft blues and greens, contributing to the overall atmospheric quality of the work. Small sailboats dot the horizon, adding depth to the scene. The painting captures the essence of the coastal environment through its careful attention to light and colour.
