Mattia Preti (1613-1699) was an Italian Baroque artist who spent much of his career in Southern Italy and Malta. He is known for his dramatic use of light and shadow, a style influenced by Caravaggio. Preti's works often depict religious or historical subjects, rendered with a theatrical flair. His artistic output includes frescoes, altarpieces, and easel paintings. He was knighted by Pope Urban VIII. His nickname was Il Cavalier Calabrese (the Calabrian Knight).
