A detailed seventeenth-century etching and engraving of Saint Paul by Jean Morin, after a painting by Philippe de Champaigne.
This print by Jean Morin depicts Saint Paul in a half-length portrait, rendered with the technical precision characteristic of seventeenth-century French printmaking. Morin was a master of the etching and engraving technique, often collaborating with contemporary painters to translate their compositions into monochrome prints. This specific work is based on a painting by Philippe de Champaigne, a figure known for his austere and disciplined approach to religious subjects.
The composition focuses on the figure of the apostle, who is shown with a weathered face, a full beard, and a halo. He holds a large, bound book, which serves as a symbol of his epistles and his role as a theologian. His right hand is raised, with the index finger pointing upwards, a gesture often associated with divine inspiration or the act of preaching. The drapery of his robes is handled with careful attention to light and shadow, creating a sense of volume and weight that defines the figure against the dark, atmospheric background.
Morin utilised a combination of etching for the initial outlines and engraving for the finer details, such as the texture of the hair and the leather binding of the book. This method allowed for a range of tonal values, from the deep blacks of the background to the delicate highlights on the saint's forehead and hands. The inscription at the base, 'S. Paulus', identifies the subject, while the credit 'Champaigne Pin.' acknowledges the original painter. This print offers a clear example of the collaborative nature of the art market in Paris during the mid-seventeenth century, where printmakers played a role in disseminating the styles of major painters to a wider audience of collectors and scholars.
