A detailed circular engraving of Saint Simon by Dutch artist Zacharias Dolendo, featuring precise line work and traditional iconographic elements.
This engraving by Zacharias Dolendo depicts Saint Simon the Apostle, presented within a circular frame. The composition focuses on the figure in a contemplative posture, his head resting upon his hand as he engages with an open book. The artist employs precise, rhythmic lines to define the folds of the saint's garments and the texture of his beard, demonstrating the technical rigour common to late sixteenth-century Dutch printmaking. The inclusion of a saw, the traditional attribute associated with the martyrdom of Saint Simon, provides a clear iconographic identifier within the frame.
Dolendo, a Dutch engraver active in Leiden, was influenced by the stylistic conventions of the period, particularly the work of Jacques de Gheyn II, whose name appears on the plate as the inventor and publisher. The print exhibits the characteristic clarity and controlled cross-hatching of the era, which allows for a subtle modulation of light and shadow across the figure. The circular format, or tondo, creates a contained space that directs the viewer's attention to the saint's expression and the act of reading. This work is part of a series representing the apostles, a common subject for printmakers who sought to provide devotional imagery for a growing market of collectors and scholars. The clean lines and balanced composition reflect the disciplined approach to engraving that defined the output of the Leiden school during this time. By focusing on the internal state of the subject, the print offers a quiet, meditative quality that contrasts with the more dramatic narratives often found in contemporary religious art. The work remains a representative example of the technical proficiency achieved by Dutch engravers at the close of the sixteenth century.
