Description
A fresco fragment by Filippo Lippi depicting Saints Augustine, Francis, a bishop saint, and Benedict. This artwork exemplifies Lippi's style, blending religious themes with humanistic elements typical of the Early Renaissance.
This artwork by Filippo Lippi depicts four saints: Augustine, Francis, a bishop saint, and Benedict. Lippi, an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance, was known for his expressive figures and use of colour. His works often combined religious themes with a humanistic approach, reflecting the artistic trends of his time. He trained under Lorenzo Monaco, and later influenced artists such as Botticelli. His personal life was unconventional; he famously eloped with a nun, Lucrezia Buti. The painting features the saints in what appears to be a fresco fragment. Augustine, in bishop's attire, stands at the upper left, holding a staff. Francis, identifiable by his simple robe and halo, is positioned in the upper right, holding a cross. A younger bishop saint stands prominently in the foreground, holding a red book. Benedict, with a long beard and dark habit, is seated at the lower right. The composition is characterised by its attention to detail in the figures' robes and faces, though the fresco's damaged state obscures some details. The colour palette is muted, with tones of red, blue, and brown dominating the scene.
