A portrait of Philadelphia publisher Samuel Fisher Bradford, painted by Rembrandt Peale around 1805, featuring a moody, atmospheric background.
Rembrandt Peale, a member of the prominent Peale family of artists, painted this portrait of Samuel Fisher Bradford around 1805. The work reflects the conventions of early nineteenth-century American portraiture, where the subject is presented with a focus on individual character and social standing. Bradford, a Philadelphia publisher and bookseller, is depicted in a dark coat with a crisp white cravat, a style typical of the period.
The composition employs a dramatic, atmospheric background that contrasts with the clarity of the sitter. While many portraits of this era utilised neutral studio backdrops, Peale chose a moody, mountainous setting. This choice adds a sense of scale and romanticism to the image. The lighting is directed towards the face of the sitter, drawing attention to his features and the subtle modelling of his skin tones. The brushwork is controlled, allowing for a smooth finish that defines the textures of the fabric and the contours of the face.
Peale received training from his father, Charles Willson Peale, and later travelled to Europe to study the works of old masters. This exposure influenced his technique, particularly in his handling of light and shadow. The portrait of Samuel Fisher Bradford demonstrates his ability to balance the demands of a formal commission with an interest in atmospheric effects. The muted colour palette, dominated by dark tones and soft greys, ensures that the focus remains on the subject. This print captures the technical precision of the original oil painting, preserving the tonal shifts and the specific characterisation of the sitter. It provides a clear example of the portraiture styles favoured by the American professional class during the early years of the nineteenth century.
