A portrait of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, painted by his friend Washington Allston in 1814.
Washington Allston painted this portrait of the English poet and philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge in 1814. The two men met in Rome in 1805 and maintained a friendship throughout their lives. Allston, an American painter associated with the Romantic movement, captures Coleridge in a contemplative state, reflecting the intellectual depth of his subject.
The composition is restrained, focusing on the sitter against a dark, atmospheric background. Coleridge is depicted in a three-quarter view, wearing a dark coat with a white cravat. His gaze is directed away from the viewer, suggesting a moment of internal reflection. The lighting is focused on his face, which is rendered with soft transitions and a sense of physical presence. The background includes a faint suggestion of architectural elements, perhaps an arched window, which adds a sense of space without distracting from the figure.
Allston was known for his interest in the emotional and psychological aspects of his subjects. In this portrait, he avoids excessive detail, choosing instead to convey the character of the poet through subtle modelling and a muted palette. The work remains a significant record of the connection between the two figures, documenting the appearance of Coleridge during his middle years. The painting is currently held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London, where it is recognised for its historical value and its representation of the Romantic era's literary figures.
