A detailed lithograph by Charles Rochussen depicting a scene from the fairy tale Tom Thumb, showing a sleeping giant and the small children.
This lithograph by Charles Rochussen depicts a scene from the fairy tale Klein Duimpje, known in English as Tom Thumb. The composition focuses on the giant, who is shown in a deep slumber, providing a stark contrast to the small figures of the children. Rochussen, a Dutch artist active during the nineteenth century, demonstrates his technical skill in lithography through the varied tonal qualities of the shading. The giant occupies the majority of the frame, his heavy form slumped against a bank, while the smaller figures interact with his boots and hide nearby.
The work captures a moment of narrative tension, common in the illustrations of the period. The artist uses soft, graphite-like strokes to define the textures of the giant's clothing and the surrounding foliage. The printing was executed by the firm Tresling & Co in Amsterdam, a common collaborator for artists of the era. The scene reflects the interest in folklore and theatrical storytelling that permeated European visual culture during the mid-to-late nineteenth century. Rochussen was well-regarded for his ability to translate literary themes into visual form, maintaining a balance between the fantastical elements of the story and a grounded, realistic approach to human anatomy and posture. The composition is structured to lead the eye from the sleeping giant to the smaller, more active figures, creating a clear hierarchy of scale that defines the core conflict of the tale. This print offers a view into the illustrative practices of the Dutch school, where narrative clarity and technical precision were prioritised.
